The main field of strategic significance for the social-economic development of the Municipality of Bankso is the tourist industry. This is the most dynamic and the fastest growing branch of the economy in the municipality. For the period 2001-2006 the amounts of the investments in the field of tourism come up to over BGN 200 MLN. This led to the opening of over 500 new employment positions in the field of tourist servicing and several times greater in the building sector.
Only in the last two years here were built over one hundred hotels, from small family hotels to luxurious four-star complexes. The bed facilities are 10,000, and the tendency is for them to reach 20,000, the catering sites are over 230. In the south part of the town, at the foot of the Pirin Mountain, is developed completely new zone for holiday vocation in the vicinity of 'Gramadeto'.

The anticipation is to build up second cabin line in the ski centre, and EUR 30 MLN will be invested in a golf playground. The local industry is presented in two works, small workshops in the timber and the tailoring industry. On the territory of the municipality are registered over 1500 companies in the fields of the trading and servicing, the processing industry, the hotel industry and catering, and agriculture.
Concurrently with the traditions in the crafts and the textile, made by the women of Bansko, the small town has kept also the tradition in the production of furniture.
The Association of the Masters and the Chamber of Timber Industry in Bansko are branch organisations of the timber workers and the craftsmen. Large part of these companies already produce furniture for the markets abroad, take part in various national and regional exhibits. The development of this branch and the investment policy of the small and medium-sized business in the timber industry are characterised by exclusive flexibility and dynamic processes.
The agriculture in the municipality is characterised by its extensive nature. The reversion of the agricultural land ended in 1998. At the present moment about 20% of the processed areas in the municipality are used. The main agricultural cultures that are grown here are potatoes and tobacco. The stock breeding includes mainly the private sector. In this sector are bred mainly cows, goats, and sheep. The tendency is to decrease the bred animals in the agricultural sector.
